Alternative Therapies

Arthritis is a debilitating condition that not only affects the physical health of the patient but also affects his mental well-being. While most of the patients with arthritis may get relief from conservative therapies but some cases may need alternative remedies like:

  • Meditation: Meditation is the practice of developing mind-body and relaxation techniques through deep concentration or focus. It includes breath work, progressive relaxation, guided imagery etc. to lessen the pain caused by arthritis. These practices reduce the mental stress and therefore decrease inflammation and pain.

  • Heat therapy: In most of the arthritis patients, muscles spasm occurs that constricts the flow of blood. Applying heat on the affected area using heating pads, warm compresses, heat patches, warm baths or even hot wax can not only increase the blood flow to the painful area but can also relaxes the muscles.

  • Alternate heat & cold therapy: In some cases, alternate heat and cold therapy is recommended as heat therapy reduces muscle spasm and constriction of blood vessels while cold therapy reduces swelling and inflammation by constricting the blood vessels. Cold therapy can be given by cold pack, ice pack or frozen vegetable packs.

  • Glucosamine. A lot of research is going on to evaluate the efficacy of glucosamine in patients with arthritis and most of them show that glucosamine works no better than placebo. But it definitely relieved arthritis pain better than taking nothing, particularly in patients with moderate to severe pain.
