Arthroscopic Surgery for Kneecap (Patellar Dislocation)

Patellar Dislocation Treatment

Patella also called as knee cap rests in the groove at the end of thigh bone or femur. Patella moves up or down within this groove during bending and straightening action of knee. But when patella slides too far to one or other side, it causes partial or complete patellar dislocation.

Characteristics ofKneecap Dislocation

  • Cause: Forceful bending or straightening of knee OR direct blow or fall on knee
  • Symptoms: Popping sound on dislocation, feeling of shift or sliding of kneecap from the groove leading to extensive pain and swelling of the area
  • Treatment: Multiple dislocation or continued instability of the patella needs to be managed by surgery. Arthroscopic surgery is successful in reconstruction of the ligaments that hold the patella in place.
