Epidural Steroid Injections

An epidural steroid injection (ESI) is a minimally invasive procedure in which medicine is directly delivered into the spinal nerve through the epidural space. Although its effect is temporary but it can relieve neck, arm, back, and leg pain caused by inflamed spinal nerves for several days or even years.

Indications for Epidural Steroid Injection

ESI may give relief to the pain in the neck, arm, low back, or leg (sciatica) caused due to any of the following condition:

  • Spinal stenosis

  • Spondylolysis

  • Disc herniation

  • Degenerative disc

  • Sciatica

  • Bone spurs

  • Thickened ligaments in the spine

  • Joint cysts

Contraindications for Epidural Steroid Injection

ESI should NOT be performed on patients with following conditions:

  • Infection

  • Pregnant

  • Bleeding problems

  • Diabetes as it may slightly elevate the blood sugar levels

  • Hypertension as it temporarily elevates the blood pressure

  • Patients on blood thinning medications

Benefits of Epidural Steroid Injection

In some of the cases injection alone can provide relief to the patient but it can be used in combination with a comprehensive rehabilitation program to provide additional benefit like:

  • Relieves pain and inflammation caused in various spinal disorders

  • Determine whether surgery might be beneficial for pain or not

  • Eases the pain enough so that patient can do physical therapy and rehabilitative exercises for better recovery

  • Improves patient functioning
