Foot & ankle are the most important part of an athlete body. They should be strong enough to bear the body weight and help the athlete in performing various sports activities. They are constantly in use while playing any sports activity and that is why they are more prone to injuries.

Main causes of Foot & Ankle injuries

  • Overuse

  • Over or sudden stretching

  • Repetitive high stress

  • Extra force

  • Weak muscles, tendons & ligaments

  • Insufficient warm up

  • Poor training methods

  • Unsafe exercising environments

  • Sudden twisting and turning of foot while running or walking

  • Lack of vitamin D & calcium can make anyone prone to bone injuries

  • Running long distances or exercising on hard surfaces

Symptoms of Foot & Ankle injury

  • Inflammation around the joint

  • Inflexibility of the joint

  • Pain in the heel, foot, ankle and lower calf

  • Numbness in the toes, foot, ankle or leg

  • Burning sensation in the lower limb

Treatment of Foot & Ankle injury

Depending upon the cause and severity of injury, physician may prescribe following treatment to the patient:

Nonsurgical Treatment

  • Rest to the foot and ankle by restricting all sports and other activities

  • Wearing an immobilizing boot to restrict the movement of foot

  • Use of crutches or walker to avoid any further damage to the foot

  • Physical therapy including specific exercises & rehabilitation program to restore flexibility and strength of the foot

  • Anti-inflammatory medications include drugs like ibuprofen and naproxen to reduce pain and swelling of the foot or ankle

  • Doing RICE i.e. rest, ice, compression & elevation

Surgical Treatment

In cases where all the above non-surgical treatment options fail to provide any relief to the patient, surgery is performed to fix the abnormality and restore the foot & ankle functionality.
