Humerus (Arm Bone) Fractures

Breakage in the bone of arm (humerus) is quite common and generally results from injury. It is also a site of pathological fractures especially in elderly individuals.

Characteristics of Humerus (Arm Bone) Fracture:

  • Cause: Fall on an outstretched upper limb OR direct trauma/blow on arm OR forceful twisting of arm OR blunt injury/bending forces

  • Symptoms: Pain, loss of shoulder/arm function, swelling, deformity and bruising

  • Treatment: Undisplaced fractures of humerus are managed by non-surgical treatment including immobilization by splint, brace. But rest of the fractures require surgery to reduce the bone and restore mobility so that patients can return to normal activity.
