The synovium or synovial membrane is the soft tissue found in joints like knee and shoulder. It is a thin membrane that surrounds the inner lining of the joint. Its main function is to create synovial fluid, which helps in nourishment and lubrication of the joint.
Characteristics of Swollen Synovium
Cause: Traumatic and repeated knee injuries OR joint diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and gout
Symptoms: Joint pain, tenderness, stiffness and swelling along with redness and warmth over the area
Treatment: Arthroscopy is used for appropriate diagnosis as well as to clean out the inflamed synovium.
