Synovitis

Synovitis is the inflammation and swelling of the lining of the joint called synovium. In most of the cases, only one joint is involved and that too for short period of time. It usually occurs in children between 3 and 10 years of age.

Characteristics of Synovitis:
  • Cause: Although the exact cause of synovitis is not known but it may be caused by a virus or from an allergic reaction to an infection somewhere else in the body.

  • Symptoms: Sudden hip pain, difficulty walking and standing and walking with a limp.

  • Treatment: Hip arthroscopy is recommended to partially remove the inflamed synovium. But it is also required to treat the underlying cause of the inflamed synovium so that it does not return.
