What is a Total Hip Replacement

The hip joint is a ball and socket joint formed of the femoral head ( thigh bone) and acetabulum ( pelvic bone). Total Hip replacement, or arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure in which the fractured or diseased parts of the hip joint are removed and replaced with new, artificial implants which we refer to as a prosthesis. The goals of hip replacement surgery include relieving pain, increasing mobility, and improving the function of the hip joint.

What is cemented total Hip Replacement

In elderly people with poor bone quality which is usually seen in osteoporosis, a block of bone cement is used to fix the metal parts to the bone. This form of surgery is referred to as a cemented hip replacement.

Uncemented implants are used in younger with good bone quality. It relies on a process called biologic fixation, which holds them in place by a process called bony ingrowth.
At Mahi Clinic, Dr. Vijay discusses in detail the procedure and the prosthesis used. Prosthesis is made up of metal or ceramic components and a highly cross-linked plastic.

Dr. Vijay does this procedure with minimally invasive techniques to minimize scarring and speed up recovery time. With proper care and rehabilitation, most patients are made to walk the next day following the surgery and are able to return to their normal activities within a few weeks after surgery.
Don't let hip fractures or chronic hip pain keep you away from living your life to the fullest. Contact Mahi Clinic to schedule a consultation and learn more about how cemented hip replacement surgery can help restore mobility and reduce pain in your hip.
