What are sports injuries?

Injuries that most commonly occur during sports or exercise are termed as sports injuries. They may be accidental or others are due to poor training practices, improper equipment, lack of conditioning, or insufficient warm-up and stretching.

What are the most common types of sports injuries?

  • Muscle sprains and strains
  • Tears of the ligaments that hold joints together
  • Tears of the tendons that support joints and allow them to move
  • Dislocated joints
  • Fractured bones, including vertebrae

When to seek medical treatment for sports injury?

Any person should not ignore any injury that causes following symptoms:

  • Severe pain, swelling, or numbness
  • Less or no weight tolerance on the area
  • Increased swelling
  • Joint abnormality or instability

Who to see for sports injury?

Severe injuries need immediate treatment in the emergency department but the rest of the cases that are mild to moderate injuries can be treated by an orthopaedic surgeon along with a physical therapist/physiotherapist.

How long will the treatment last for injury-causing knee, arm, leg or back pain?

The length of treatment depends upon the severity and duration of the injury. It requires proper diagnosis and evaluation of the injury to define the most suitable line of treatment.

How soon will the patient be able to start his regular activities and sports?

It all depends upon the severity of the injury and the time taken by the body to heal it. Sportspersons are especially advised to start physical and rehabilitation therapy as soon the wound heals to lessen their field off time.

Can every injury be treated to an extent that athlete will be able to return to the filed?

No there are chances that some severe injuries may limit the athletic activities of a sports person and in turn finish their sports career. That is why all sports persons should not ignore even a minor establishment as early treatment increases the chances of early return to the filed.
