Knee cap pain
Chondromalacia patella, also known as patellofemoral pain syndrome, is a condition characterized by pain and discomfort in the front of the knee, specifically around the kneecap (patella). The condition is caused by the wearing down of the cartilage that cushions the kneecap as it slides against the thigh bone.
The shiny layer called cartilage under the kneecap (Patella) gets damaged due to overuse and sometimes injury. The cartilage becomes rough and gives pain while bending the knee joint.
Causes
- It is common in young individuals.
- Acute injury to the patella
- Improper lifting, throwing or hitting
- Chronic friction between the patella and the femoral intercondylar groove.
- Quadriceps weakness, Iliotibial band tightness, Patellar Maltracking , Fracture patella
Symptoms
- Pain
- Swelling
- Difficulty in walking and bending the knee due to pain
- Painful staircase climbing up and down
Treatment
- Physical therapy, Cartilage regenerating medications, are helpful.
- Injection Platelet rich plasma is a recent modality in the failed conservative management.
Prevention of chondromalacia patella involves maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular exercise to strengthen the muscles around the knee, and avoiding activities that place excessive stress on the knee joint.
Additionally, proper stretching and warming up before physical activity can help to prevent knee injuries and reduce the risk of chondromalacia patella.
