Shoulder Dislocation

In shoulder dislocation, the head of the humerus is out of the joint.

Types of dislocation – 4 types

• Anterior (most common)
• Posterior (seen in individuals after an electric shock, seizures)
• Inferior
• Superior

Causes

• Falling on outstretched hand.
• Lifting arm over the head and rotating externally.
• It is also seen in individuals after electric shock and following seizures.

Symptoms

• Pain
• Inability to move the arm

Treatment

• Closed Reduction procedure to gently move the bones back to the position.
• Surgery might help in patients with weak shoulder joints or ligaments
• Wearing a special sling for 3 weeks, to keep the shoulder from moving.
