Hip Replacement Surgery

Total hip replacement (also called total hip arthroplasty) is the surgical procedure performed to remove the damaged bone and cartilage and replace it with prosthetic components. It involves replacement of whole of the hip joint by a major surgery that requires hospitalization.

Indications for Total Hip Replacement

The various conditions that need total replacement of hip joint include the following:

  • Hip damaged by arthritis like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and traumatic arthritis
  • Avascular necrosis

  • Childhood hip disease
  • Hip tumors

  • Painful and difficulty while doing common activities such as walking or getting in and out of a chair
  • Hip pain that continues while resting, either day or night
  • Hip stiffness
  • Uncomfortable even while resting
  • Failure of conservative treatment
Eligibility Criteria for Surgery

The eligibility for total hip replacement surgery depends upon the patient’s pain and disability. Although most of the patients who undergo total hip replacement are between 50 to 80 years of age but there are no absolute age or weight restrictions for total hip replacements. It is successfully performed at all ages, from the young teenager with juvenile arthritis to the elderly patient with degenerative arthritis.

Procedure of Total Hip Replacement

The procedure is performed under general or spinal, epidural anaesthesia and takes a few hours. During the procedure, surgeon removes the damaged cartilage and bone and replaces it with new metal, plastic, or ceramic implants to restore the alignment and function of the hip joint.

The orthopaedic surgeon will choose the type of prosthesis that best meets the needs of the patient.
