The procedure is performed by an orthopaedic surgeon under general or regional anesthesia. It involves the removal of the end of the femur bone and its replacement with a metal shell. The end of the bone of the lower leg i.e. tibia is removed and replaced with a channeled plastic piece with a metal stem. In addition to the replacement of parts of bones of the upper and lower leg, depending on the condition of the kneecap portion of the knee joint, a plastic “button” may also be added under the kneecap surface. The posterior cruciate ligament is either retained, sacrificed, or substituted by a polyethylene post.

The procedure itself takes approximately 1 to 2 hours.

Single and Double Joint Total knee replacement surgery

Total knee replacement surgery can be performed on single or both knee joints depending upon the damage of the joints and patient’s age and overall health. The procedure for a single joint replacement remains the same while bilateral can be performed in the following ways:

  • Simultaneous bilateral knee replacement is one surgery for both joints in single sitting under one anesthesia
Benefits of Simultaneous Bilateral Total knee replacement-
Low cost: The cost of bilateral replacement is approximately 20% cheaper when compared to combining two separate single total knee replacement surgeries.
Reduced length of hospital stays: Approximately 7 days in both knee replacement and 10 days when a single procedure is performed for both knees separately.
  • Avoids readmission in the hospital for second knee replacement surgery
  • Reduced exposure to anesthetic medications and associated complications
  • Simultaneous rehabilitation of both the knees can be done at the same time
  • Quicker recovery
  • Avoids the need of heel raise in slippers of non-operated side limb for limb length discrepancy

Prognosis of Total knee replacement

Although most of the patients experience a remarkable decrease in the pain and increased the mobility of the knee joint, still some risks and complications may occur after total knee replacement. To have an improved quality of life after surgery, the patient should religiously follow the instructions and perform rehabilitation exercises as advised by the surgeon and physical therapist. In case of any unusual symptoms, the patient should immediately report to their physician.
