Carpal Tunnel Release

Carpal tunnel is a small space in the wrist from where the median nerve and several tendons run from forearm to the hand. Median nerve controls movement and feeling sensation of thumb, index, ring and half of ring finger of hand. Any pressure on the median nerve causes carpel tunnel syndrome.

Causes

  • Repetitive use of the wrist, such as typing or using power tools.
  • Excess pressure on the median nerve can lead to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
  • Swelling during pregnancy can put pressure on the median nerve.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis can cause inflammation in the wrist, causing CTS.
  • A wrist fracture can cause swelling that puts pressure on the median nerve.
  • Thyroid disorders can cause swelling that puts pressure on the median nerve.

Symptoms

  • Numbness or tingling or weakness in the hand, and sometimes pain up the arm

Treatment

  • Arthroscopic surgery can be done to reduce the pressure and relieve any pain
