De Quervain’s disease

De Quervain's disease, also known as De Quervain's tenosynovitis, is a condition that affects the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. It occurs when the tendons and their protective sheaths become inflamed, causing pain and difficulty with thumb and wrist movements.

Causes

  • Repetitive motions of the wrist and thumb, such as gripping or lifting objects.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis can cause inflammation in the joints, including the wrist.
  • Pregnancy can increase the risk of this condition due to fluid retention
  • Injuries to the wrist and thumb, such as a fall or direct blow.

Symptoms

  • Pain and swelling on the thumb side of the wrist.
  • Difficulty with thumb movements.
  • A snapping sensation when moving the thumb.

Treatment

  • It includes rest, splinting, physical therapy, NSAID’s.
  • In severe cases, cortisone injections or surgery may be recommended.
