Hip Fracture

A breakage in the upper quarter of the femur (thigh) bone is termed as hip fracture. It is quite a complicated fracture that mostly requires surgical intervention.

Causes

  • Fall OR direct blow to the side of the hip OR forceful twisting of leg.

Symptoms

  • Pain or weakness over the outer upper thigh or in the groin.
  • Discomfort while flexing or rotating the hip.

Treatment

  • Some fractures of the hip can be managed non-surgically.
  • Other fractures require surgery to reconstruct the normal anatomy of the hip
  • Hemiarthroplasty/Partial Hip replacement and restore mobility.

Post-surgical recovery

  • Patients are mobilized full weight bearing
  • High bed sitting
  • Spirometry
