Ganglion Cysts

Ganglion cysts are common, non-cancerous, and harmless masses or lump in the hand that may be filled with fluid. They can quickly appear, disappear, and change size.

The exact cause of ganglion cysts is not known, but they are thought to develop from the fluid-filled sacs that surround the joints and tendons.

Causes

  • A previous injury can increase the risk of developing a ganglion cyst.
  • Repetitive use of the joint, can increase the risk of developing a ganglion cyst.
  • Osteoarthritis can increase the risk of developing a ganglion cyst.
  • Ganglion cysts are more common in women and in people over the age of 40.

Symptoms

  • Visible lump that does not cause any symptoms.
  • Pain, tingling, and muscle weakness if cyst puts pressure on nerves.

Treatment

  • Surgeon can remove the stalk of the cyst for cosmetic purposes.
  • Removal of stalk can eliminate the chances of its reoccurrence.
